Senior Accountant Investment Operations Department

Why did you join GIC? Firstly, GIC is an established financial institution with worldwide offices that manage a diverse portfolio of financial instruments. Thus, I believe GIC can help me achieve both depth and breadth in my knowledge of the ever-changing investment universe. Secondly, finance and accounting have always been my interests. The position as an accountant in GIC presents a window of opportunity for me to advance my career in both arenas at the same time. Killing two birds with one stone, why not? Lastly, it would be curiosity. GIC plays a pivotal role in the preservation and growth of Singapore’s reserves. I guess many will be interested to know how GIC manages it so well! What duties do you carry out within a typical day/week? I belong to the accounting group within the Financial Services Department. I liaise with our custodian banks and external fund managers, appointed by GIC, daily on accounting and transition issues. Part of my time is also devoted to coordinating transition activities among my team, the asset departments, the appointed transition managers and our custodian bank. My team and I also act as the liaison persons between our clients and internal partners in GIC on operational and accounting related matters. What gives you most enjoyment in the work you do? There is always something new everyday! Things just keep changing here. I feel that this keeps the work we do very much “alive” and exciting! My work also allows me to meet many people of different nationalities and races, who are very passionate about what they are doing. On a professional level, I get to learn more about the industry and how different organisations function through interacting with these external parties. On a personal basis, I can get to know more about their culture and their way of life. Tell us about the working environment. GIC has a very dynamic working environment as things and people here move very quickly. Despite the hectic work schedules, I’ve come to learn that GIC folks do gym and play real hard at the same time! Healthy lifestyle is the way to go! Tell us about your social life, interests and hobbies. - What do you read? Music is my first love. One will typically find me hanging out at music stores browsing through the collection or lazing around at some café playing great music outside office hours. Once in a while, I will also hit the pubs or karaoke places with my friends! Music aside, I guess life will not be the same without books and more books! I read almost everything, as long as it is interesting. This includes mysteries, fantasies, romance, inspirational, self-learning, comics and even recipe books! As for sports, I am a swimming fan and am lately very much into pilates, thanks to the lunch time classes organised by the GIC Recreation Club!
