  Managing Director
Fixed Income Currency Commodities Department

Why did you join GIC?
GIC offered the prospect of significant individual discretion in terms of risk-taking, product set, and degrees of freedom with regards to the investment universe. Many investment firms are severely limited in terms of investment scope, and individuals can become too narrowly focused. GIC seemed to be able to provide me with the environment that I felt I needed to take my investment process and skill set to the next level. The level of autonomy in the decision-making process also heavily appealed.

What duties do you carry out within a typical day/week?

My main responsibility is to manage the Credit Alpha Group for GIC. This means co-ordinating the efforts of a group of people in our Singapore, London, and New York offices. Our goal is to meet annual profit targets by taking risk in the global credit markets. That means that my week is spent in meetings with my team members, working on the investment process, talking to other market participants, reading research, and travelling around the world to meet companies and try to source good opportunities for the portfolio.

What gives me the most enjoyment in my work?
A combination of the buzz of taking risk, intellectual curiosity about trying to work out "why things are the way they are" and an academic interest in building a more robust and valuable investment process.

What would you most miss about your job if you were to leave GIC?
All of the above, and of course my wonderful colleagues!!

Tell us about the working environment.
Relaxed but driven. We are a relatively small team and there is a collegial like approach to our business model. However, at the same time we are all very much focused on the bottom line - this can mean early starts, lunch at your desk, and lots of business travel.

What are my interests/social life?
My main interest is playing the piano, travel, and anything that involves being in the mountains!

What do you read?
I hate to say it but mainly market-related books. I enjoy reading the experiences of the many people who have spent their lives trying to work out what this "market" we all work in is really all about. I believe human behaviour primarily drives markets, and that this repeats and repeats. So, the more you know about the past, the more you will be prepared for the future!
