GIC Special Investments (GIC SI) was started in 1982 as the private equity investment arm of GIC. We aim to provide significant added returns and risk diversification to GIC's total portfolio through investing in private equity. Our investment covers a wide spectrum which includes leveraged buyouts, venture capital, growth capital, mezzanine financing, distressed situations, infrastructure and other special situation investments.
From a setup of one investment officer in Singapore, we have grown to become one of the world's largest and most experienced private equity investors. Today, GIC SI manages a multi-billion dollar portfolio of fund investments and direct investments in companies, and has staff spread over five offices in Singapore, Beijing, London, New York and San Francisco.
We currently have an international network of over 100 active fund manager relationships and more than 2000 companies covering a diversified range of industries. This extensive network enables us to facilitate linkages between fund managers and companies across regions and sectors. As one of Asia's largest private equity investor, we differentiate ourselves by being able to provide an Asian perspective and a relationship network.
GIC SI is organised into three business groups. The Funds and Co-Investments Group looks after fund investments and co-investments globally. The Direct Investments Group makes direct investments worldwide, primarily in Asia, Europe and North America. The Infrastructure Group makes direct and fund investments in infrastructure assets. The Portfolio, Strategy and Risk Group makes strategy and policy recommendations in areas such as asset allocation, investment pace and risk management; assists in investment evaluation; and helps to actively monitor, and manage SI’s portfolio by enhancing the value of selected investments.
