Dr Teh Kok Peng, President, Special Investments
GIC Special Investments (GIC SI) was started in 1982 as the private equity investment arm of GIC. We aim to provide significant added returns and risk diversification to GIC’s total portfolio through investing in private equity. Our investment covers a wide spectrum which includes leveraged buyouts, venture capital, growth capital, mezzanine financing, distressed situations, infrastructure and other special situation investments.
From a setup of one investment officer in Singapore, we have grown to become one of world’s largest and most experienced private equity investors. Today, GIC SI manages a multi-billion dollar portfolio of fund investments and direct investments in companies, and has staff spread over five offices in Singapore, Beijing, London, New York and San Francisco.
We currently have an international network of over 100 active fund manager relationships and more than 2000 companies covering a diversified range of industries. This extensive network enables us to facilitate linkages between fund managers and companies across regions and sectors. As Asia’s largest private equity investor, we differentiate ourselves by being able to provide an Asian perspective and a relationship network.
GIC SI is organised into seven groups: the Corporate Services Unit and six investment groups. The North America Private Equity Group and Europe Private Equity Group look after fund investments and co-investments in the US and Europe respectively. The Global Technology Group makes investments in venture capital funds worldwide while the Asia Private Equity Group is responsible for direct and fund investments in Asia. The Global Infrastructure Group is GIC SI’s newest group and makes direct and fund investments in infrastructure worldwide. Lastly, the Global Strategy and Investment Group overlays its views on investment proposals as well as makes strategy and policy recommendations in areas such as asset allocation, investment criteria and risk management.
