Dr Mohamed A. El-Erian is the Chief Economic Advisor to Allianz, Chair of Gramercy Funds Management, the Rene M. Kern Professor of Practice at the Wharton School, and Senior Global Fellow at the Lauder Institute (both at the University of Pennsylvania). He is a member of the GIC International Advisory Board and an advisor to the GIC Investment Strategies Committee. He chairs the board of Under Armour and serves as a trustee of several non-profits, including the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER – Executive Committee).
Previously, he was CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO (2007-2014), and Chair of President Obama’s Global Development Council (2012-2017). He was Deputy Director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, Managing Director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup, and President and CEO of the Harvard Management Company.
Dr El-Erian writes regularly for major publications. He is a Financial Times Contributing Editor and has published three best sellers–the 2008 “When Markets Collide,” the 2016 “The Only Game in Town”, and the 2024 “Permacrisis: A Plan to Fix our Fractured World” (co-authored with Gordon Brown, Michael Spence, and Reid Lidow). Dr El-Erian has received multiple awards and accolades for both his professional and philanthropic accomplishments. This includes being on Foreign Policy’s list of 100 Top Global Thinkers four years in a row and receiving the Egyptian Cancer Network’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his support of cancer treatment and cures for children in Egypt.
Dr El-Erian holds a BA/MA in Economics from Cambridge University, and a Master’s and Doctorate in Economics from Oxford University. He has been awarded two Honorary Doctorates.
